Snow and Ice Information

The Town of Webster is responsible for snow and ice control on Town, County and State roads within Webster, with the exception of the NYS Expressways.

The Highway Department runs three shifts to remove snow during the season, which is January 1 through March 31.

These shifts are:
Office/Shop—7:00 am to 3:30 pm
B— 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm
C—3:00 am to 11:00 am.
There is also a dispatcher on call 24 hours a day from December 1 to April 1.

During very heavy snowfalls and blizzard conditions we can put up to 35 pieces of equipment on the road:
20– full size dump trucks with plow/wing and salter
3– F-750’s with plow/wing and salter
2– F-550’s with hydro turn plows and salter
4– F-350’s with hydro turn plows
3– loaders
2– backhoes
1– grader with 12’ hydro plow and 14’ wing

When we have storms with a high rate of snowfall (2-4 inches per hour) or heavy wet snow it can still be difficult to keep up, even with 35 pieces of equipment on the road. For a 6” snowfall, it takes us approx. 5 hours for a single plow run. If we are receiving snow at a rate of 2” per hour, this means approx. 10” of snow down when we start the next pass.

However, there are things that homeowners can do to help us do our job more efficiently:

- Do not park in road:
Whenever possible do not park your cars in the road. Although the Town code states that the “…parking of vehicles is prohibited on all Town highways and county roads within the Town of Webster and outside the Village of Webster, between 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am from November 1 to April 1”, any vehicle parked in the road or cul-de-sac at any time is a hindrance to our operations. During a storm your vehicle could be towed if it impedes our clearing the road.

- Limit travel as much as possible:
If you can go out before the storm arrives and get all the supplies you need, it will help our operation by reducing traffic.
